As a new day dawns, I woke up thinking about the families who lost loved ones yesterday in Las Vegas. It happened in an instant during the deadliest mass shooting in American history, to date.
As I write this, the death toll stands at 59. More than 527 people were injured.
I'm reminded of what a concert-goer told a reporter, "It was completely horrible, but it was amazing to see people come together."
It is true that Good always triumphs over evil. Witnesses recall people helping complete strangers. So many people stayed with the wounded. Everyone was communicating. Then later, there were huge lines to donate blood. People of all ethnicities coming to the rescue.
Over the next few days, we will see more of the goodness that comes out after times like these. It's sad that it takes tragedies to bring people closer together. But, it backs up what science has shown - that the basis of our nature is cooperation, not competition.
Peace will be restored around the world. It'll just take time. There will be other tragedies, man-made and natural...but we have to be patient, to be open to the lessons, to stop hating, to trust and most importantly start with ourselves.
In the words of Chinese Philosopher, Lao Tse:
If there is to be peace in the world, there must be peace in the nations.
If there's to be peace in the in the nations, there must be peace in the cities.
If there's to be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighborhoods.
If there's to be peace between neighborhoods, there must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home, there must be peace in the heart.
